Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ/TMD) Treatment
Northwest Portland, The Pearl District and Downtown Portland
The jaw condition temporomandibular joint disorder (also known as TMJ or TMD) can cause painful, chronic symptoms including migraine-like headaches. Without treatment, TMJ/TMD can progressively worsen and lead to additional problems including premature tooth wear and periodontal disease.
Applying the principles of neuromuscular dentistry, Portland, Oregon, orthodontist Dr. JD Miller can successfully diagnose the source of your TMJ/TMD and design a custom treatment plan to relieve you of your discomfort.
One of the most effective tools in diagnosing and treating TMJ/TMD is transcutaneous electrical neural stimulation (TENS). TENS uses a mild electrical stimulation to relax your jaw muscles, allowing your jaw to settle into a comfortable and natural position.
For some patients, reversing the nagging symptoms of TMJ/TMD is as simple as stopping poor oral health habits such as pen chewing, nail biting, ice chewing, tongue thrusting or teeth grinding.
More severe cases of TMJ/TMD may require the use of oral appliances or orthodontic treatment.
Because TMJ/TMD can be caused by a wide range of bite conditions, teeth spacing issues and jaw alignment problems, only a thorough examination with Dr. Miller can determine the best treatment option for your individual condition.
